Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Eddie Perez spent parts of 11 seasons in the majors, mostly with the Atlanta Braves and primarily as a backup. When he did get a chance to play regularly, he showed a little pop in his bat, hitting 7 homers while filling in for injured backstop Javy Lopez in 1999 and bashing 11 dingers while the Milwaukee Brewers' starter in 2003.
After his big league career ended, he was a Mississippi Braves coach in 2006 and also played in 13 games for the team. Following that season, he was promoted to the Atlanta coaching staff as bullpen coach in 2007 where he stayed for many years. Perez began 2016 as the Braves bullpen coach once again. However, when manager Fredi Gonzalez and bench coach Carlos Tosca were fired on May 17th, Perez switched to coaching first base. He stayed there until the end of the 2017 season. Perez left his on-field coaching role in 2018, but it is not entirely clear what job he held with the Braves. He was probably a special advisor to player development, a role he definitely filled from 2019 through 2021.
Perez returned to the Braves' coaching staff in 2022 as a major league coach and continued in that position through 2024.
In 2014-15, he managed the Águilas del Zulia in the Venezuelan League. He explained that he considered himself ready for a major league managerial opportunity and saw the winter league job as preparation for such a role. Perez had also managed Aguilas during the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 seasons.
