Biographical Information

Henry Edson "Eddie" Matteson pitched 15 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1914 and 34 games for the Washington Senators in 1918. He also had a long minor league career, through age 43, although the minor league database shows him starting in the minors in 1915 at age 30. He had some success in the minors: in 1918, with the Dallas Giants, he was 19-5, and in 1921, with the New Orleans Pelicans, he went 17-6.

He was nicknamed "Matty", presumably after pitcher Christy Mathewson, who had a similar last name and was also nicknamed Matty.

The Washington Herald of March 16, 1919, indicated that Eddie was bringing his violin along to spring training with the Senators in 1919, and would use it to accompany Nick Altrock's comedy.

Another pitcher named Matteson was active in the minors when Eddie broke into the majors - George Matteson - and references to a pitcher Matteson in Sporting Life in 1913 appear to be to George rather than to Eddie. Eddie's last name was misspelled as Mattison when he first came to the majors, so it is possible any appearances in the minors prior to 1914 have been recorded under a different spelling.

Through 2019, the only other big league player with the last name Matteson has been C.V. Matteson, who played in 1884.
