Biographical Information[edit]
Ed "Husky" Walczak played 20 games in the majors in September 1945, mostly as a second baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies. The regular second baseman for the Phils that year was 21-year-old Tony Daniels, playing in his only major league season. The following year Emil Verban had the job after coming over from the St. Louis Cardinals.
He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II before being discharged early in 1945. He had been playing on service teams and caught the eyes of scouts. Desperate for players, the Phillies brought him up immediately to the majors. He had actually played mostly third base in the service, but the Phillies plugged him in where they had a need. He batted .211 in 57 at-bats.
