Biographical Information

Big Ed Stevens was the regular first baseman for two teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers of 1946 and the Pittsburgh Pirates of 1948. He hit 10 home runs for each team. In 1946, his 10 homers were the second-highest total on the team, while in 1948 his 10 home runs were third-best on the team.

Although he had been the regular in 1946, in 1947 he was replaced at first base by Jackie Robinson. He had one plate appearance on April 15th against the Boston Braves in Robinson's debut, before being sent to the Montreal Royals for most of the rest of the season. In 1948, Stevens went to Pittsburgh, where he replaced another Hall of Famer, Hank Greenberg.

Stevens played for Montreal in 1944, 1945 and in 1947. In 1947, he was fourth in the International League in home runs there.

Stevens scouted for the Minnesota Twins (1964-1974), Seattle Mariners (1977-1979), San Diego Padres (1980-1981, 1986-1989), and Oakland A's (1982-1985). He was a Padres coach in 1981. In 2009 he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.
