Biographical Information

Ed Samcoff, a native of Sacramento, CA was a second baseman in the New York Giants organization. Ed was drafted by the Philadelphia Athletics from the Giants on November 16, 1950 in the 1950 Rule V Draft after hitting .306 for the Sioux City Soos of the Western League.

Samcoff started the 1951 season with the Athletics. He was in the majors long enough to make a road trip to see where the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators played and to start one game in Yankee Stadium. He was hitless in eleven at-bats in four games before being sent out to the Memphis Chicks of the Southern Association.

Ed had started his pro career with the Stockton Ports of the California League in 1946, hitting .303 in 115 games. He hit .315 again for the Stockton club in 1947 and was voted the California League's Most Valuable Player. 1950 was a big year for Ed, giving him his first real chance at the majors. It's difficult for a young player to make that type of adjustment in such a short time.

His major league run was discouraging but Ed played well for Memphis, hitting .276 in 108 games and for his own reasons he left baseball at the end of the 1951 season. He had six years in the minors and wound up hitting .291 with 33 homers in 795 games.

Samcoff went to work for the Exxon Corporation, where he retired as a sales representative after 30 years in 1982, to his home in the Sacramento suburb of Fair Oaks, CA.
