Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Green was a 30-year-old rookie in 1890 who was the # 2 pitcher on the Philadelphia Athletics, a year in which there were three leagues competing for players and fans. The # 1 pitcher on the team, Sadie McMahon, was 22 years old, and spent the last quarter of the season with the Baltimore Orioles.
Green won the last game the Athletics played before they disbanded with the team in debt in mid-September. Another owner put together a replacement team, with only one player from the previous team - Ed Green. The replacements lost all 22 games to finish out the season. As a result, it's a little unfair to judge Ed Green by his full-season statistics. The original team had been competitive, while the replacement team was definitely not.
Green was an electrician in civilian life, who lived and worked in Philadelphia, PA. He died there of cirrhosis of the liver in 1912 and was buried in Palmer Cemetery in the city.
