Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Gastfield played two years in the majors. The Baseball Rookies Encyclopedia says that the Grand Rapids minor league team folded in August 1884, and two batteries from that team came to the majors later in the month to play against each other on August 13, with John Henry, caught by Jerrie Moore, playing for Cleveland, while Charlie Getzein, caught by Ed Gastfield, played for Detroit.
After baseball he became a plumber.
A brief obituary in Sporting Life, December 16, 1899, said he was "once a well-known catcher". He began as a player in the Chicago City League, and along with Pretzels Getzien went to Grand Rapids and then Detroit to play pro ball.
