Biographical Information[edit]
Jerrie Moore hit quite well in the abbreviated season of the 1884 Altoona Mountain City but not as well in the National League in 1884-85.
The first major leaguer born in Windsor, ON, Moore was 29 when he came to the majors for the first time. At Altoona he split his time between catcher and outfielder, while in the National League he only played catcher.
He was recently remembered in an 2006 article at mlb.com:
" . . . [Kenji] Johjima is the first catcher in 122 years to homer on Opening Day in his first game in the Majors. The last catcher to do so was Jerrie Moore, who homered for the Cleveland Blues in 1884."
