Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Caskin was a weak-hitting infielder who earned his keep defensively. He played mostly shortstop, but also had 69 games at third base, 33 at catcher, and 19 at second base. He also worked a couple of games as a fill-in umpire, one in the National League in 1884 and one in the Players League in 1890.

Ed broke in at 27 with the Troy Trojans in 1879, a team which also included Hall of Fame rookie first baseman Dan Brouthers. The next season, 1880 the Trojans added two more Hall of Fame rookies in Roger Connor and Buck Ewing. Caskin was added to the "blacklist" at an 1881 NL meeting barring him from playing for or against any NL team. He was reinstated in 1883 and played for the New York Gothams along with Connor and Ewing. By his last two seasons, 1885 and 1886, he was one of the oldest players in the league. In 1886 and 1887, he also played at Rochester, Lynn and Salem.

He is one of four players (through 2019) born in Danvers, MA. One of the others, Thorny Hawkes, also broke into the majors in 1879.
