Biographical Information[edit]

"Thorndike Hawkes also lives close by (Salem). He was second baseman in last year's Haverhills and cannot be beaten in that position." - from The Sporting Life, December 29, 1886

Thorndike "Thorny" Hawkes was the starting second baseman for the 1879 Troy Trojans at age 26, and then came back to be the starting second baseman for the 1884 Washington Nationals. Those were his only two years in the major leagues.

Hawkes also played in the minors for teams such as Manchester (NH), Lynn (MA), Haverhill (MA), Salem (MA) and Greenville (MI).

He is one of four players (through 2019) born in Danvers, MA. One of the others, Ed Caskin, also broke into the majors in 1879.
