Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Callahan was a National League umpire in 1881, working 29 games. Three years later, he played 8 games for three different teams in the only season of the Union Association, 1884. He also umpired one game in the fledgling major league.
Callahan hit well in 1884, with a batting line of .333/.357/.333. He played outfield and shortstop. The first team to try him was the St. Louis Maroons, a winning team for which he didn't get a hit in his one game. The second team was the Kansas City Cowboys, a team for which he hit .364 in three games. The Cowboys went 16-63 for the year. The last team was the Boston Reds, a team finishing a bit above .500, for which Callahan hit .385.
Ed was the only Callahan playing in the majors at the time, but the media seemed to misspell the name of Pat Callaghan as Callahan a lot.
"At Baltimore . . . the Kansas City team at least secured a victory . . . Kansas City earned the winning run on Sullivan's double and Callahan's single." - Sporting Life, about the game on September 22
