Biographical Information[edit]
Earl Harrist is remembered as the pitcher who struck out Larry Doby in his first major league at-bat. Stories about the incident mention that Doby was quite discouraged, but they don't mention that Harrist was a knuckleball pitcher, and when the knuckler is going right, it can be extremely hard to hit. Harrist also got Joe Gordon on strikes right after Doby. See The Cleveland Indians Encyclopedia.
He also pitched for the Oakland Oaks.
