Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Dusty Coleman played 31 big league games in parts of two seasons.

Dusty was taken by Oakland in the 28th round of the 2008 amateur draft, one pick after first baseman Nate Freiman, and was signed by scout Yancy Ayres. Not a strong offensive player, Coleman showed some pop and speed in his career. In 2011 and 2012, he hit 15 home runs each year and reached 20 stolen bases in a season twice. He also struck out a lot - in 119 games in 2009, he had 154 strikeouts; in 130 games in 2011, he whiffed 185 times, in 2012, 182 times and in 2013, 160 times. Through 2013, he struck out in more than one-third of his at-bats. On July 14, 2014, playing for the Midland RockHounds of the AA Texas League, he made the news when he rushed to defend teammate pitcher Blake Hassebrock who was threatened by a fan who had run to the mound to confront him after he had hit a Corpus Christi Hooks batter with a pitch. Playing third base, Coleman immediately rushed to Hassebrock's defense, tackling the intruder to the ground in a move that would have made a football coach proud. The fan was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and threatening assault.

Coleman was on Team USA's roster for the 2015 Pan American Games but yielded when he was called up a few days before the Games were to start. He played four games for the eventual world champion Kansas City Royals, going hitless in five at bats. He had a longer look with the 2017 San Diego Padres, batting .227/.268/.455 with four home runs in 66 at bats.
