Duluth Whalebacks

From BR Bullpen

The 1891 team in the Western Association did not have a nickname, at least for the Duluth part of the season. The actual Duluth Whalebacks of that era were a team consisting of local players with a minimum weight of 200 pounds each. They played against other teams with burly players, such as the Ely Elephants and the St. Paul "heavyweights." A whaleback was a cargo boat used mainly to haul iron ore on the Great Lakes.
