Biographical Information[edit]
Doug Bennett pitched for Team USA and in the minors.
Bennett was Gatorade Player of the Year for Missouri in 1988. [1] He was on the US team that finished second in the 1988 World Junior Championship. [2] He won Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Year in '89 and Arkansas made the 1989 College World Series. [3]
He was 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA for Team USA in the summer of 1990, ahead of pitchers like Scott Klingenbeck and Paul Byrd. [4] He won Bronze with the US in the 1990 Goodwill Games but was not with them for the 1990 Baseball World Cup. [5] He was not the only Arkansas hurler on the team that year; Phil Stidham was also present.
The Los Angeles Dodgers took him in the 5th round of the 1991 amateur draft, two picks after William VanLandingham. He was 4-5 with a 3.30 ERA for the Yakima Bears that summer, allowing only 31 hits and striking out 65 in 57 1/3 IP but walking 45. He was 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA for the 1992 Bears to end his minor league career with a composite 5-5, 3.19 record.
