Biographical Information

Dong-hoon Yoo was arguably the best reliever in South Korea in 2009.

Yoo pitched for South Korea in the 1997 Asian Championship, when they won Gold. He turned pro after college, signing with the Haitai Tigers. He was 7-9 with two saves and a 4.75 ERA as a rookie in 1999, giving up 26 home runs in 155 1/3 innings. In 2000, he had a 0-3, 6.71 record with 82 hits and 40 walks in 56 1/3 innings.

The Tigers became the KIA Tigers in 2001; Yoo was 2-2 with a 7.38 ERA. He did not pitch in 2002 and saw limited action in '03 (Sv, 3.80 in 12 games). He had a very good year in 2004, going 7-2 with five saves and a 2.98 ERA in 68 games.

His career then came to a halt due to legal problems. He was arrested by military police and jailed for eight months. After coming out of prison, he spent two years in public service.

Yoo returned to the field in 2008 and provided a boost to the KIA bullpen, going 6-3 with two saves and a 3.43 ERA. He allowed only two home runs in 79 2/3 innings.

In 2009, Yoo had a 6-2 record with 22 saves and a 0.53 ERA, allowing only 37 hits (2 home runs) and 20 walks in 67 1/3 innings. He was third in the KBO in saves behind Yong-chan Lee (who went to the same high school) and Jon Adkins but had a significantly better ERA than either.
