Biographical Information[edit]

Don Dickerson was the 21st player drafted in the 1968 amateur draft; he peaked at AA. His brother Wayne Dickerson was the 10th player picked in the 1965 amateur draft.

Don hit .429 as a high school senior. He was the first player taken in the second round of the '68 draft - in every year since, the 21st pick (his slot) would have been a first-round one (due to expansion). New York had taken Tim Foli in the first round. The only player drafted as a first baseman in 1968 prior to Dickerson was Greg Luzinski (who achieved his success as an outfielder).

Don was assigned initially to the Marion Mets. He hit .249/.394/.456 for them the summer he was drafted, with 14 doubles, 9 home runs, 53 walks and 45 RBI in 69 games. He made 18 errors at first base, tying for the most in the Appalachian League at that position. Other than defense, contact was his only problem, given his power and walk rate. He led the Appalachian League in walks, tied for 4th in home runs, ranked 4th in doubles and 6th in RBI.

Dickerson continued his fine walk rate for the 1969 Pompano Beach Mets but showed less pop in a pitcher-dominated circuit - his batting line was .220/.371/.305. He cut his error total to 10, showing strides with the glove. In 1970, the 20-year-old infielder (who was also catching part-time this year) only hit one home run in 197 at-bats, splitting time between Pompano Beach (14 for 36, 13 BB, 5 2B), Memphis Blues (0 for 3, BB, HBP) and the Visalia Mets (.215/.349/.272 in 56 G). He concluded his career with the 1971 Pompano Beach club, hitting .209/.377/.388 in 24 games while backing up Tom Hallums.
