Biographical Information

Dom Scala has been a college coach, scout, minor league player and bullpen catcher.

Scala was a two-time East Coast Athletic Conference All-Star in college. He hit .420 as a senior. was picked by the Oakland Athletics in the 9th round of the 1976 amateur draft. He played for two seasons in the minors. In 1976, he was with the Boise A's (2 for 7, HR) and Modesto A's (.194/.297/.368 in 38 G). With Modesto, his .769 fielding percentage ranked last among third basemen in the California League with 5+ games. Dom split 1977 between Modesto (.255/.355/.396, 13 PB in 24 G at C) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (2 for 21, 6 BB).

From 1976-1986, Scala was bullpen catcher for the New York Yankees, when they won the 1978 World Series. He was advance scout of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1987-1990, including a trip to the 1990 NLCS. He was assistant coach at St. Mary High School then was appointed head coach at Adelphi University in 2004, succeeding longtime coach Ron Davies (1966-2003). He was 19-22 his first year, then 25-19 in 2005 when Scala was named East Coast Conference Coach of the Year. In 2006, Adelphi was 21-23 followed by 35-17 in 2007 and 25-25 in 2008. In 2010, his team was 29-19. He was better yet in 2011, winning 36 games, a school record. He was named Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year. They fell one win shy of a trip to the 2011 Division II College World Series. Scala was dismissed in April 2021 [1].
