Dieter Heller played for the German national team several times. He was 0 for 2 in his debut in the 1955 European Championship. In the 1956 European Championship, he hit .176/.222/.235 with one error and three putouts. He stole two bases and drove in three in 4 games. He led Germany in steals and RBI (Eduard Zimmermann was the only other German with multiple RBI). When Germany got the Silver in the 1957 European Championship for their best European Championship ever (through 2018), he was 1 for 5 and handled 3 putouts (offensive and defensive stats are not available for all their games).

Heller was 0 for 12 in the 1958 European Championship but managed to drive in a run; he fielded .889 for the Bronze Medalists. In the 1960 European Championship, his swan song, he was 0 for 8 with two walks. He had 7 putouts, one assist and one error. Overall, he had hit .091/.149/.114 with 4 runs and 4 RBI in 16 games, stealing twice. He struck out in 17 of 44 at-bats and fielded .880.
