Biographcial Information[edit]

Diego Cartaya is a top catching prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers who was signed to his first professional contract as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2018, out of Venezuela.

He made his professional debut in 2019, playing for two Dodgers affiliates in the Dominican Summer League, the DSL Dodgers Mota and the DSL Dodgers Bautista, hitting a combined .281 in 49 games. He was invited to major league spring training in 2020, as any able-bodied catcher is a valuable property inthe early days of camp, and his position also got him an opportunity to spend that summer at the Dodgers' alternate training site while the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he played 31 games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Low-A West b ut his season was ended in mid-July by an injury, limiting him to 31 games as the minor leagues got off to a late start that year. He continued to show a live bat, by hitting .298 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs during that stretch. He finally had a chance to play a full season in 2022, starting at Rancho Cucamonga and then earning a promotion to the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League after 33 games. He was named to the National League squad for the 2022 Futures Game, which was played in his likely future home park, Dodger Stadium, on July 16th. In the 2nd inning, he lifted a fly ball to deep center field which was misplayed by Jasson Dominguez into a two-base error that allowed two runs to score. In 95 games in the minors, his batting line was .254/.389/.503, with 22 doubles and 22 homers, 74 runs and 72 RBIs. While the major league Dodgers were set at catcher for the time being with Will Smith and Austin Barnes, Diego was expected to be knocking on the door by the end of the 2023 season.
