Team History[edit]

The Des Moines Underwriters were a Western League team for a season. In 1905 the Des Moines Prohibitionists were renamed the Underwriters because of the number of insurance companies located there. The team won the '05 Western League pennant at 95-52, thanks to the efforts of run leader George Hogreiver, batting champ Claude Rossman and pitchers Lefty Leifield and Bill Chappelle. The team played the Milwaukee Brewers in a post-season match but lost 3 of 5 games.

In 1906 the team was re-named the Des Moines Champs. The team would have six nicknames in the first decade of the 20th century.
