Biographical Information[edit]

In 1905 Lefty Leifield was the ace of the Des Moines Underwriters, winning 26 games to lead the Western League; the Underwriters won the pennant thanks to his efforts. Barney Dreyfuss of the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased Leifield's contract for $2,500. In his major league debut, the second game of a doubleheader, he shut out the Chicago Cubs for six innings before the game was called, a 1-0 win for the Bucs.

After being released by the Cubs on July 14, 1913 Leifield returned home, then went to San Francisco, CA. In 1915 he went to Spring Training with the Pirates but instead played for the St. Paul Saints. On August 20th he struck out 15 in a game for the Saints.

In 1918, Leifield returned to the majors after a four-year hiatus, as a player-coach for the St. Louis Browns. By 1920 he was basically a full-time coach and he was received quite a bit of credit for leading the 1922 squad to the best season in team history. He also would coach for the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.
