Biographical Information[edit]

". . . Derrell Griffith . . . has a short stride, quick wrists and a fine, level, left-handed swing." - from Sports Illustrated, April 19, 1965

Derrell Griffith, who did well enough in the minors that he was considered a "can't-miss youngster", played four seasons in the majors. He got his most at-bats with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1964, hitting .290 in 238 at-bats but fielding .769 in 35 games at third base.

Griffith was signed as a free agent in 1962 by the Dodgers, and the next year, 1963, at age 19 he was already up with the Dodgers for one game at second base. In the minors he was with the Albuquerque Dukes in 1963, after having played for the Great Falls Electrics in 1962. After his 1964 season, he came back in 1965 and 1966 as an outfielder, but with fewer at-bats. The Dodgers won the pennant in 1963, 1965 and 1966, but Griffith did not appear in postseason play.

After the 1966 season, he was traded to the New York Mets and then to the Houston Astros, but did not play in the majors with either team.

He is one of three major leaguers born in Anadarko, OK, along with Cal McLish and Butch Huskey.
