Derin McMains reached AAA briefly.
McMains hit .359 with 20 steals and 62 runs for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in 2000, finishing 5th in the Sun Belt Conference in average. In 2001, he improved to .379, third in the SBC. He was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Derin made his pro debut with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, hitting .281/.350/.403. He was the Northwest League's best defensive second baseman, leading in fielding percentage (.966), putouts (134) and assists (176). The only major category he did not lead in was double plays, where Dan Uggla turned 41, 3 more.
In 2002, McMains fell to .242/.313/.342 for the Hagerstown Suns but fielded .981 at second and stole 14 bases in 17 tries. McMains split 2003 between Hagerstown (.289/.406/.392, 18 SB in 20 tries in 54 G) and the San Jose Giants (.248/.303/.312 in 25 G). Overall, he handled 210 chances at second without an error.
The Iowan infielder put up a .271/.314/.362 line for the 2004 Norwich Navigators. His .992 fielding percentage led Eastern League second sackers. In 2005, he hit .325/.376/.434 in limited action for San Jose. During 2006, Derin batted just .223/.329/.296 with 18 steals in 24 attempts for the Connecticut Defenders and was 2 for 14 with a walk for the Fresno Grizzlies, his lone look at AAA. His .984 fielding percentage at second for Connecticut paced the EL, the third time he had led his league in fielding. McMains wrapped up in 2007 for Connecticut, going 1 for 9.
He was a coach for the 2009-2010 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and the 2011 AZL Giants. He then managed the AZL Giants in 2012-2013.
