Biographical Information

"Ed Dunkle, of the Wilkesbarre club, and the star pitcher of the Atlantic League, has been signed for the next season by Manager Irwin. In the last ten games he pitched Dunkle won eight." - from The Times (Wash., D.C.), October 2, 1898

Pitcher Edward "Davy" Dunkle played in the majors during two different stints, totaling five seasons, with some successful minor league campaigns in between.

Born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, Dunkle was playing in the Pennsylvania State League by age 21. He reached the majors late in the 1897 season with the Philadelphia Phillies and went 5-2 in 7 starts (all complete games) to post his only big league season over .500 (ironically, for a club that was 55-77 on the year). After going 1-4 with a 6.98 ERA in 12 appearances for the Phillies in 1898, he was 0-2 with a 10.04 ERA for the Washington Senators in 1899.

Dunkle then returned to the minors for several years and found success. With the Providence Grays in 1901, he was 26-13, and he won 30 while losing just 10 for the Louisville Colonels the next year. He began 1903 back in the bigs with the Chicago White Sox but was traded to the Senators in July. A year to the day after his trade to Washington, his contract was sold back to Louisville, and he returned to the minors to end his playing days.
