Biographical Information[edit]
Along with Richard Leander, David Leander forms a second-generation of the Swedish Leander baseball clan. He was Sweden's top hitter in the 2001 European Championship, batting .333/.458/.467 for the last-place club. In the 2003 European Championship, he was 3 for 14 with a double; he also pitched, giving up 5 runs in 1 inning and losing the contest.
Leander hit .311/.423/.516 for Tranås in the 2004 Elitserien and went 6-4 with a 4.69 ERA. He tied for third in the league in wins and his 58 strikeouts were third, well behind leader Johan Tisell. In 2005, David batted .326/.473/.571 for the Skövde Saints and posted a 3-1, 6.00 record. He was 3 for 8 with a run and a RBI in the 2005 European Championship, primarily backing up Petter Diurlin and Eric Mercado at 2B. He played for Sweden in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, being used as a corner outfielder and DH. He hit .278/.381/.278, one of the country's better hitters.
David returned to Tranås in 2006 and produced at a .465/.469/.724 rate with 26 RBI in 58 AB. He went 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA as well. Had he qualified, he would have been third in ERA and first in average and slugging. In 2007, he hit .275/.353/.327 for Gefle and was 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA on the hill.
Leander was with Tranås in 2008 and hit .281/.354/.500 while going 6-3 with a 4.40 ERA. He was 7th in the league in ERA and tied for third with five home runs.
Leander was on Sweden's preliminary 40-man roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
