Johan Tisell has been a key pitcher for the Sundbyberg Heat, primarily in relief. He allowed 5 runs in 3 innings in the 2001 European Championship. In 2003, he was 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA and .242 opponent average. He led the Elitserien in ERA and was 4th in opponent average. He went 1-1 with a 8.22 ERA in the 2003 European Championship. He was arguably Sweden's best pitcher in 2004, going 12-1 with 12 saves and a 1.97 ERA. He struck out 127 and allowed only 73 hits in 105 innings. He led the Elitserien in strikeouts (41 ahead of the next hurler), wins and saves and was third in ERA and opponent average (.190).
In 2005, Tisell went 1-0 with a 7.72 ERA. He was 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA in the 2005 European Championship, taking defeats against Great Britain and Croatia. He pitched for Sweden in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, losing decisions to Panama and Brazil. He went 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA, allowing 15 runs, 11 hits and 5 walks in 8 1/3 IP.
He was worse in the '06 Elitserien, with a 12.14 ERA in 6 2/3 IP. He rebounded in 2007, going 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA, 19 strikeouts and 11 hits in 19 innings and leading the league with five saves. He went 0-1 with a 5.08 ERA in the 2007 European Championship, finishing 4th on Sweden's staff in ERA. He tossed scoreless innings against the Dutch national team and Austria. He allowed 5 hits and 3 runs in 2 1/3 IP in a 9-7 loss to Great Britain then gave up one run in two innings versus Spain. He thus faced all of the top 3 teams in the tournament (Netherlands, Britain and Spain in order).
In 2008, he went 2-1 with a save and a 4.29 ERA and fanned 26 in 21 innings.
