David Lakey began scouting with the Houston Astros in 1980. He was scouting director of the Astros from 1997-2004. He was responsible for drafting over 30 major league players, well ahead of the MLB average. Among those he signed as a scout or scouting director were Brad Lidge, Lance Berkman, Morgan Ensberg, Troy Aleshire, Hunter Pence and Tuffy Rhodes.
