Biographical Information[edit]
David Altopp was a 3-year letterwinner in baseball and also made all-Prairie College Conference in basketball at Greenville College. After graduating he coached at Phoenix Christian High School.
Altopp returned to Greenville as head baseball coach in 1970-1971 while Bob Smith took a sabbatical. He was also assistant basketball coach. He moved to Marion college as head baseball (1973-1975) and basketball (1972-1973 - 1974-1975) coach.
He returned to Greenville yet again as director of physical education and baseball coach in the fall of 1975. Altopp stayed at Greenville through 1990 as baseball coach, with the exception of 1980. He then moved to Trevecca Nazarene College in 1991, as Athletic Director, baseball coach, and head of the school's physical education department. He replaced Elliot Johnson as baseball coach in a department-wide shakeup, primarily due to an accreditation requirement that each department in the college have at least one member with a doctorate degree. Altopp's doctorate was the key.
Altopp stayed at Trevecca through 1996, then moved to Lee University to start the baseball program there in 1997. He coached Lee through 2005, taking the school to the NAIA playoffs in 2001-2005, culminating with an appearance in the 2005 NAIA College World Series.
The Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association inducted Altopp into its Hall of Fame in 2008. He has been inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame [1] and Lee University Hall of Fame [2] as well.
