Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Darin Downs earned his first major league win on August 5, 2012, as the result of a tremendous comeback by the Detroit Tigers. He entered the game against the Cleveland Indians with one out in the 10th inning, after Joaquin Benoit had just surrendered a pair of solo homers to Shin-Soo Choo and Ezequiel Carrera to put the Indians ahead, 7-5. He gave up another run in completing the inning, but with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 10th, his teammates mounted a great comeback, scoring 5 runs off Chris Perez capped by Miguel Cabrera's two-run walk-off homer, to win, 10-8. He went 2-1, 3.48 in 18 games that season but did not get to pitch in the postseason as the Tigers made it to the 2012 World Series.

In 2013, he pitched 29 times in relief in the majors, with a record of 0-2, 4.84. Once again, he was left off the postseason roster. He was placed on waivers after the season and picked up by the Houston Astros. He started the season in the minors but was called up in early May and pitched quite well out of the bullpen. He earned his first win of the year on June 8th under rare circumstances - a decision of the official scorer. The Astros starter against the Minnesota Twins that day, Collin McHugh, had to leave the game before completing 5 innings because of a blister, and was not eligible for the win even though the Astros were ahead. The relievers who followed him were not very effective, but the Astros bats kept on pounding runs, with both Chris Carter and Jon Singleton connecting for grand slams in the late innings. Houston ended up winning, 14-5, and Downs, who had pitched the last 2 2/3 innings as his team's fourth pitcher and was the only one who did not allow a run, received credit for the victory.
