Biographical Information[edit]

Danny Young's debut was ignominious. Pitching against the New York Mets in Japan on March 30, 2000, the Chicago Cubs' hurler came into the game in the 11th inning and quickly unraveled. After getting the first two batters out, he surrendered a single and two walks to load the bases. Pinch hitting for pitcher Dennis Cook, outfielder Benny Agbayani stepped to the dish and, on Young's second pitch, clobbered a grand slam to put the Mets ahead, 5-1. He then surrendered a double to the next batter, Jay Payton, before finally getting out of the inning. His major league career lasted three more games; he finished with a 21.00 ERA. In 3 innings, he allowed 7 runs on 5 hits and 6 walks, while striking no one out. He was the second major leaguer to debut in Japan, one day after teammate Tarrik Brock.

Prior to that game, he had spent all of 2 games at Triple-A and 50 at Double-A. The majority of his career (7 seasons) had been spent in the low minors, in Rookie or Single-A/High-A ball. Success eluded him on the farm, as well, as he went 22-52 (.297 winning percentage) in 252 minor league appearances (76 starts). In 611 1/3 innings, he allowed 658 hits and 418 walks (1.760 WHIP), while striking out 523 batters. At Single A, he was 11-35 (.239 W%) with a 5.03 ERA in 104 games (56 starts).
