Biographical Information

Outfielder Daniel Johnson was drafted in the 5th round of the 2016 amateur draft by the Washington Nationals out of New Mexico State University. His first taste of professional baseball came that year with the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League, where he hit.265/.312/.347 in 62 games. In 2017, he split the season between the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League and the Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League and in 130 games he hit .298/.356/.505. He hit 29 doubles and 22 homers, scored 83 runs and drove in 72 and was both a mid-season and post-season All-Star in the Sally League. He was also named a Nationals organizational All-Star.

Having now established himself as a legitimate prospect, Daniel lost part of the 2018 season to an injury, and made a short rehabilitation stop with the GCL Nationals. The rest of the year, however, he was in AA with the Harrisburg Senators where he hit .276 with 6 homers and 31 RBIs in 89 games. After the season, on November 30th, he was involved in a major trade as he headed to the Cleveland Indians along with Jefry Rodriguez and a player to be named later (Andruw Monasterio) in return for C Yan Gomes. Back in full health, he started the 2019 season in AA with the Akron Rubber Ducks, but after 39 games on May 25th was promoted to the Columbus Clippers of the AAA International League where he stayed for the remainder of the season. His combined batting line was .290/.361/.507 in 123 games, with 34 doubles, 7 triples, 19 homers, 76 runs scored and 77 RBIs. He was named to the American League team at the 2019 Futures Game and was an Indians organizational All-Star.

He made the Indians' opening day roster in 2020 and made his debut in his team's second game, on July 25th, starting in right field. He went 0-for-3 with a walk. However, he played just 5 games that season, going 1 for 12 (.083) and spending the rest of the year at the Indians' alternate training site, given the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, he spent most of the season in AAA with Columbus, where he played 72 games but hit just .222 with 14 homers and 39 RBIs. He was given another brief look in Cleveland but did not do much better, as he batted .221 in 30 with 4 homers but just 5 RBIs. He was back at Columbus at the start of the 2022 season and after dealing with some injuries was hitting .217 in 17 games with 3 homers and 11 RBIs. On May 26th, the now-renamed Cleveland Guardians sent him to the New York Mets in return for $1, a move designed to make room on the 40-man roster for another outfielder, Óscar González, who was promoted to the big league team the same day.
