Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Dana Brown was a college teammate of Mo Vaughn, Craig Biggio, and John Valentin at Seton Hall University. He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 35th round of the 1989 amateur draft. Brown debuted professionally with the Batavia Clippers, hitting .274/~.336/.367 with 18 stolen bases. In 1990, Dana split the season between the Clearwater Phillies (.256/~.330/.309, 30 for 37 in steal attempts, 12 outfield assists) and the Spartanburg Phillies (.291/~.395/.351, 27 runs in 34 games, 10 for 12 in steals, 22 BB). In his last year as a player, he made it to AA with the Reading Phillies. For Reading, Brown hit .244/~.314/.299 and stole 24 bases, second on the club to Bruce Dostal.

In 1992, Del Unser of the Phillies offered him a job as a coach. In 1993, he left the Phillies for a job as a scout with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2002, Montreal Expos General Manager Omar Minaya brought him on board with the Expos as the Scouting Director. When Minaya left for the New York Mets in 2005, current General Manager Jim Bowden came on board retaining him in that role.

In October 2009, Brown was hired as a "special assistant" to new Jays' GM Alex Anthopoulos, both having worked together for the Expos. Brown stayed with the Jays for nine years, then followed Anthopoulos to Atlanta in 2019, where he was Vice-President for scouting. On January 26, 2023, he was hired by the Houston Astros as the team's General Manager, replacing James Click who was fired after winning the 2022 World Series. That made him the only African-American GM in the majors at the time.

He has signed John Lannan, Ian Snell, Eury Pérez, Larry Broadway and Chris Young.
