Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Dan Simonds was drafted in the 7th round of the 1987 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He began his professional career with the Bluefield Orioles, hitting .270/~.350/.320 and with the Miami Marlins (.229/~.270/.314 in 11 games). In 1988, Dan was with the Fresno Suns and put up a .252/~.290/.284 line for the co-op club. He split 1989 between the Frederick Keys (.194/~.242/.258) and the Hagerstown Suns (.246/~.301/.281). In 1989, Simonds was selected by the Eastern League to play on the Diamond Diplomacy Tour in the former Soviet Union. After a .206/~.229/.235 output in his first 11 games with Hagerstown in 1990, Baltimore let him go and the Chicago Cubs signed him as a free agent. He produced a .156/~.217/.156 line in 27 games with the Winston-Salem Spirits that year and .318/~.357/.394 in 19 games for the Peoria Chiefs. In '91, Simonds split the year between the Charlotte Knights (.247/~.342/.330 in 34 games) and the Iowa Cubs (.125/~.282/.125 in 20 outings) to conclude his time as a player.
Following his playing career, he had his first professional coaching experience from 1992 to 1994 as a bullpen catcher for the Chicago Cubs. He managed the Lethbridge Mounties in 1995. He was a roving instructor and coach for the Bluefield Orioles in the Orioles organization in 1996. Dan then worked in the San Diego Padres organization from 1997 to 1999 serving as the hitting and catching instructor for the Clinton Lumber Kings from 1997-98 and manager of the Fort Wayne Wizards in 1999.
In 2000, Simonds turned his attention to college baseball. He was an assistant at the Miami University (OH) from 2000-2004. In 2005 he received his first oppportunity to be a head coach, as he was named head coach at Xavier University. He was only at Xavier for one year before he returned to Miami, this time as head coach. In 2014 Simonds became associate head coach at Indiana University.
