Biographical Information

Donald Dexter "Dan" Griner played six seasons in the majors. Although he never had a winning record in the majors, he rarely had a losing record in the minors.

Much of his minor league career was spent at St. Paul, MN. He won 21 games in 1919 for the St. Paul Saints, a team which went 115-49.

Griner was managed by Hall of Famers Roger Bresnahan and Miller Huggins while with the St. Louis Cardinals, but the team usually was well under .500. He was also managed by Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson when he played for the Brooklyn Robins.

The book Baseball in Minnesota mentions that Griner was accused of throwing an emery ball in one game.

Griner's line for 1917 with the St. Paul Saints indicates he allowed 18 bases on balls. The more realistic figure was 81, as reported in Wright's compendium on the American Association (1997). [1]
