Biographical Information[edit]
Dan Bickham played for Princeton University at a time when the major league teams played lots of exhibition games against college teams. As a result, Dan was well-known to the pro teams, and was offered a contract by the New York Metropolitans in 1885, but chose to stay in college. He played college football and baseball the following year, 1886, and in the summer joined his father's newspaper business. However, he did pitch one game in the majors for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which drew a large attendance from Dan's hometown. Dan stayed in the newspaper business for years, then worked as an accountant, worked for a governmental agency, and was a real estate agent.
Dan had a reasonably good day in the big leagues, pitching nine innings and giving up only three earned runs (although also a bunch of unearned runs), and getting one hit and one walk in four plate appearances.
