Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Dale Powell played in the Washington Senators system from 1952 to 1954, winning one home run title.

He played baseball and basketball in college. He began his professional career as a 24-year-old in 1952, hitting .280/.349/.475 with 150 hits, 105 RBI and 25 home runs in 139 games for the Danville Leafs. He led the Carolina League in games played and home runs (the only player over 20). He was 4th in slugging and tied Paul Owens for the RBI lead. He also led in fielding percentage at 1B (.988). In 1953, Powell hit .250/.299 /.397 with 131 hits and 14 home runs in 133 games for the Charlotte Hornets. His 28 errors easily led first basemen in the Tri-State League, 11 more than anyone else. He split 1954 between the Hagerstown Packets, Winston-Salem Twins and Chattanooga Lookouts, hitting .266 with 107 hits and around 11 home runs.

He later worked in fine paper sales for Dillard Paper Co. In retirement, he was active with the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department, Seaside United Methodist Church and The Museum of Coastal Carolina.
