Biographical Information[edit]

Ray "Dad" Hale pitched in the majors in 1902. He pitched eight games for the Boston Beaneaters, and was released on July 24th. He was then signed a week later by the Baltimore Orioles and pitched three games for them.

Ray had ten years in pro ball, including in 1901 when he was 19-15 for the Los Angeles Angels.

The nickname "Dad" was common during his time, beginning with Dad Clarke. However, by 1902, it was fading out as a nickname, with Dad Hale and Dad Clark the last two players to be given the nickname.

"Hale made a good impression here and ought to prove a winner. He had speed to burn the air, and could put them over whenever necessary." - Sporting Life, April 12, 1902
