Biographical Information[edit]
Craig Maddox played college ball at Southeastern University and graduated in 2007 with a degree in sports management. After graduation he signed with the Detroit Tigers and played in rookie ball that season. Maddox spent 2008 with the New Jersey Jackals in what proved to be the first of several seasons playing in independent ball. He started 2009 in the Atlanta Braves minor league system but was released at the end of April. He returned to the independent leagues and kept playing there through the 2019 season. In twelve independent league seasons, Maddox hit .262/.312/.389 while appearing in 871 games.
While still a player, Maddox laid the foundations for his post-playing career. He served as a player/hitting coach with the New Britain Bees in 2016-2017. He started 2019 in a similar vein with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs until a June trade to the Rockland Boulders where he finished his playing career. According to his LinkedIn page, Maddox also worked as an associate scout for the Minnesota Twins in 2016 and Washington Nationals in 2018-2019.
The San Francisco Giants hired Maddox in 2020 to be the DSL Giants Black hitting coach before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. He was the hitting coach for the DSL Giants Orange in 2021 and ACL Giants Orange in 2022. Maddox left affiliated ball in 2023 to work as the hitting coach for the Billings Mustangs in the independent Pioneer League. In October 2023 the Mustangs promoted Maddox to manager for the 2024 season.
