Biographical Information[edit]
Multi-positional ballplayer Craig Clayton played in the minor leagues from 1991 to 1997. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 6th round of the 1991 amateur draft.
During his final year at college,he batted .364/.428/.564 with 100 hits in 63 games at the plate and was 14-5 with 15 complete games (in 18 starts), a 2.25 ERA and 9.32 K/9 IP mark on the mound. He was a consensusAll-American that year; Baseball America picked him as a pitcher, Collegiate Baseball as a utility player and the American Baseball Coaches Association as their NCAA Division II DH.
Professionally, he was a third baseman from 1991 to 1993 and performed well offensively, batting .313/.379/.391 in 1993 and .290/.351/.390 for his career.
He first pitched in 1991 (one game), but did not join the pitching staff full time until 1994. He was mostly used as a relief pitcher, though he was a starting pitcher in 1995. That year, with the Riverside Pilots, he was 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA in 28 starts; in 160 1/3 innings, he had 156 strikeouts.
Clayton peaked at Double A. In 118 career appearances (32 starts), he was 18-16 with a 4.68 ERA. In 336 1/3 innings, he allowed 346 hits and 162 walks, while striking out 325 batters.
