Corpus Christi Spudders

From BR Bullpen

In the 1938 Texas Valley League the Corpus Christi Spudders posted the best record (92-44), but lost to the Harlingen Hubs in the post-season. The Spudders boasted the top hitter in Manuel Cortinas, who hit .380/~.454/.646. Cortinas hit 18 triples, stole 15 bases, tied for the league lead in homers, and was voted the All-Star RF in the league. He got help - All-Star 2B George Hausmann hit .355/~.434/.549 with 66 extra-base hits, 33 steals and a league-best 157 runs scored. All-Star SS Tom Woodruff hit 20 triples and stole a league-high 44 bases. 1B John Scolinas led the league with 21 triples. The pitchers did their share as well - Tom Finger (21-5, 2.75) led the TVL in ERA and Ben Kneupper (14-4, 4.41) pitched a no-hitter. The TVL was gone by '39 and pro baseball would not return to Corpus Christi, TX for 11 years.
