Biographical Information

Cliff Carroll played eleven seasons in the majors. An outfielder, his most prominent year with the bat was with the Chicago Colts in the three league year of 1890. He finished second in the NL in runs scored (134), first in at-bats (566), fourth in hits (166), fifth in home runs (7) and first in singles (137) en route to a .285/.352/.369 line.

Carroll was born in 1859 in Clay Grove, IA, northeast of Des Moines. The book A History of the Boston Base Ball Club, written in 1897, states Carroll started in pro ball with the "celebrated" Peoria Reds in 1878. From 1879-1880 he was with the Athletics of San Francisco and then with Providence. In 1889, he worked his farm near Bloomington, IL, but in 1890, which was a year of three major leagues, he was lured back to play ball by Cap Anson. He was suspended (the book says "unjustly suspended") while with the St. Louis Browns of 1892 for "allowing a ball to go into his pocket", and he refused to play with St. Louis the next year, going to the Boston Beaneaters who promptly won the 1893 National League pennant.
