Biographical Information[edit]
Claudio Cecconi won a Silver Medal with the Italian national team in the 1987 European Championship then was with them for the 1987 Intercontinental Cup. In the 1988 Baseball World Cup, he hit .293/.355/.317 with 7 runs and one RBI in 11 games. He was Italy's main DH but also handled 23 chances error-free as the backup to Gianguido Poma at second base. He won Gold with Italy in the 1989 European Championship, when he won the best hitter award. Starting at third in the 1990 Baseball World Cup, he hit .227/.304/.364 with seven RBI in seven games, fielding .833. He tied Roberto Bianchi for second on Italy in RBI, one behind Elio Gambuti. He also took Gold in the 1991 European Championship. In the 1992 Olympics, he batted .238/.238/.286 with two runs and one RBI in six games; starting at third for Italy, he handled 29 chances and made no errors. His first Olympic hit came off B.J. Wallace of Team USA.
Unfortunately, the Italian Baseball and Softball Federation historical stats section vanished a couple years prior to this writing (Jan. 2022) and has never been restored, so more complete stats from his playing career are missing.
