Biographical Information[edit]

Alberto Cruz debuted in the minors in 2006. He is the son of Tommy Cruz, the cousin of Jose Cruz Jr. and Jose Cruz Jr., the brother of Cirilo Cruz (both Alberto and Tommy were also named Cirilo) and the nephew of José Cruz, Sr. and Héctor Cruz.

Cruz was drafted in the 37th round of the 2003 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers but did not sign. He was on the NAIA champions in 2004 and Cumberland was the NAIA runner-up in 2006. Cruz also played for the Mankato MoonDogs while in college.

In 2006, he was picked in the 27th round of the 2006 amateur draft by the Houston Astros. He hit .220/.333/.381 for the Greeneville Astros with a team-high 7 homers but also a team-high 78 strikeouts in 223 AB. He led the Appalachian League in strikeouts and led league first basemen in putouts (516) and errors (9).
