Biographical Information[edit]

''He's got some kind of arm . . . He either walks them or strikes them out. Not too many hit him. If he gets it going, he'll really be something." - 1990 Phillies manager Nick Leyva, after Chuck Malone's first major league game

Chuck Malone was a flamethrower who also walked a lot of batters. In his seven games in the majors, he had a decent 3.68 ERA along with one win, but also walked eleven batters in 7.1 innings.

That was consistent with his minor league career as well. He walked 7.6 batters per nine innings pitched. Sometimes he walked more - with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barons in 1990, he walked 78 batters in 76 innings, along with getting 79 strikeouts. With the same team in 1991, in 5 games he walked 32 in 13 innings. There were times when his control seemed to be better; in 1987 with the Clearwater Phillies, he kept the walks down to 63 in 120 innings.

With the major league Phillies, his 3.68 ERA was better than the team average of 4.07, and better than closer Roger McDowell's ERA of 3.86. And his strikeouts per nine innings (8.6) were much better than the team average of 5.2 However, his WHIP was much higher than the team average.
