Biographical Information[edit]
Chris O'Grady made his major league debut in 2017.
O'Grady had a 1.62 ERA as a high school sophomore and was All-Conference both as a sophomore and junior, but a knee injury caused him to miss his senior year. As a college freshman, he allowed two runs in 2/3 of an inning. He was 3-1 with a 4.06 ERA as a sophomore and 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA as a junior. As a GMU senior, he went 2-0 with 14 saves, a 1.22 ERA, 51 K in 37 IP and only 20 hits allowed. He tied the school record for saves and set a record for lowest opponent average (.163). He made All-Colonial Athletic Association. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took him in the 10th round of the 2011 amateur draft; only Chris Widger had been drafted higher in GMU history. The scout was Dan Radcliff.
Chris was 3-3 with a 5.87 ERA for the 2012 Orem Owlz in his pro debut. In 2013, he pitched for Orem (4 R, 2 ER in 8 IP) and the Burlington Bees (3-1, 2.17 in 21 G, only 9 BB in 45 2/3 IP). With the 2014 Inland Empire 66ers, he was 4-4 with five saves and a 3.33 ERA, fanning 81 in 83 2/3 IP in a hitter-friendly league, while walking only 17. He was 3-0 with a save and a 1.42 ERA for the Mesa Solar Sox, giving up only 5 hits in 12 2/3 IP in another hitter-dominant environment. In 2015, O'Grady pitched for the Arkansas Travelers (0-5, 4 Sv, 3.31 in 38 G) and Salt Lake Bees (3 R in 8 2/3 IP). He was 6th in the Angels chain with 45 games pitched.
The Cincinnati Reds took him in the 2015 Rule V Draft; they had previously picked outfielder Jake Cave that year.
With a fastball in the low 90s, he relies on a cutter as his top pitch.
