Biographical Information[edit]
Chris George pitched four seasons in the minors.
George was 6-1 with 4 saves, a 2.83 ERA and 47 K in 35 IP for Missouri in 1999. The Houston Astros took him in the 25th round of the 1999 amateur draft, one pick before John Foster. Chris was excellent in his pro debut with the Auburn Doubledays (2-1, 2 Sv, 1.48 in 21 G, 41 K in 30 1/3 IP). With the Michigan Battle Cats in 2000, he went 3-2 with 24 saves, a 1.38 ERA and only 34 hits in 58 2/3 innings. He tied Michael Neu for 4th in the Midwest League in saves.
The St. Louis native spent 2001 with the Lexington Legends, going 5-1 with two saves, a 3.88 ERA and 65 strikeouts but also 30 walks in 51 IP. On July 30, he was part of a combined no-hitter against the Hickory Crawdads. Replacing Derek Stanford (who was recovering from tendonitis) in the 5th, he tossed 3 perfect innings before Kirk Saarloos wrapped it up. Let go by Houston, he split 2002 between the New Jersey Jackals (1-0, Sv, 5.79 in 7 G) and Sioux City Explorers (2-1, Sv, 0.66 in 7 G). Overall, he had gone 13-5 with 30 saves and a 2.33 ERA in 123 minor league games. In 181 1/3 IP, he struck out 193 and allowed 138 hits and 70 walks.
He was on the Greek national team roster for the 2003 European Championship but was injured before the tournament and did not appear for Greece as they won the Silver Medal.
