Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Chris Abbe was drafted twice. Initially, he was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 31st round of the 1989 amateur draft, a couple of picks after pitcher Joel Adamson and a few ahead of hurler Dave Telgheder. He did not sign. He did sign after being taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 5th round of the 1992 amateur draft, between infielders Steve Rodriguez and Steve Cox.

He began his career at low A ball in 1992, slashing .302/.380/.490 with 9 home runs and 37 RBI in 52 games for the Yakima Bears. He jumped to Double A in 1993, and though he fell to .205/.311/.394, he hit 13 home runs in 82 games for the San Antonio Missions. Back with San Antonio in 1994, he posted a .263 average with 7 home runs. Overall, he hit .252/.341/.430 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI in 207 games.
