Biographical Information[edit]
Chin-Yi Cheng played in the TML and the CPBL.
The Kaoping Fala signed Cheng when the Taiwan Major League was founded in 1997. Cheng played well in his rookie year, batting .221/.330/.336 with 6 dingers. He tied for the most home runs among local players with Yu-Hsiang Tsai, and won the Best Ten award as a 1st baseman. Cheng improved in 1998, hitting .247/.321/.395 with a career-high 10 homers in 106 games. He blasted the first and the only walk-off grand slam in TML history. 1999 was Cheng's career year, as he recorded a .279/.366/.478 batting line with 10 home runs, and was selected into the All-Star Game. Cheng also led the league in strikeouts with 79. The Chiayi native extended his elite performance, hitting .284/.396/.416 with 7 homers in 2000, and got into the All-Star game again. He singled and drove in the winning RBI in that game, and won the All-Star Game MVP award. Cheng had a career-high .288 batting average with six homers in 2001, but he regressed a little the next year, and only had a .234/.365/.482 batting line. Cheng was the all-time strikeout leader for the Taiwan Major League with 378.
When the two leagues merged in 2003, Cheng was assigned to the Macoto Gida. However, the star infielder never had any productive season among his four years in the CPBL. He hit .212/.308/.343 and was released by the Macoto Cobras after he recorded a 3-for-21 in the 2006 season. Cheng then served as batting coach with the DMedia T-Rex in 2008. He is a broadcaster now.
Overall, Cheng had hit .247/.342/.404 with 64 homeruns in ten seasons in the CPBL and TML.
