Biographical Information

Wally Mattick, the father of Toronto Blue Jays manager Bobby Mattick, played in the majors in 1912, 1913 and 1918.

In 1912 Wally had 66 games in center field for the Chicago White Sox, while Ping Bodie appeared in 72 games at that position. The following year, 1913, Wally had 56 games in center field while Bodie had 76.

Mattick played 15 seasons in the minors, including multiple seasons with Oskaloosa, Des Moines, Kansas City, Vernon and Dallas.

After his playing career ended, Mattick was a minor league manager and a scout. In 1940, he scouted for the St. Paul Saints [1]. He died in Los Altos, CA, only a few miles from Ty Cobb's long-time home in Atherton, CA.

He was sometimes called Chink, but he was also called Chick. His brother Earl was signed to play for Dubuque in Dec. 1912.
